A huge thankyou to all of the ladies who participated in our 2009 Quilt of Love Challenge and groups who donated quilts to the Special Care Unit of the Toowoomba Base Hospital. In our inaugural year over 2 dozen quilts were donated which was a wonderful effort.
I was fortunate to be able to handover these quilts to the Nursing Unit Manager - Frieda Coorey who was speechless with our generosity and the exquisite quality of the quilts donated.
Here we are pictured with the winning quilt of the challenge made by Karen Rafton placed over one of the little bubs. - Yes I was even allowed in the ward!! So grateful.
The quilts will be used in a number of ways - some can be used in the day to day use in the ward to soften the "hospital look" of the ward and keeping glare off the littlies ones faces, some are used to assist in bereavement as small items for the families to have as keepsakes, some are used as keepsakes for families that babies are given up for adoption of the like.
So if you would like to support this wonderful cause there are 2 sizes suitable - 50cm x 50cm or the larger 1metre square quilt. These are a great way to practice new techniques, use up scraps and just to do a wonderful thing for the sick bubs and their families. So get started for our next challenge in 2010! If we receive enough we hope to spread them around more hospitals next year!
The nurses said that non-gender quilts plus a variety of colourways, pastels, brights, gender specific are also very welcome, and while they are grateful for any donations we must remember not to have little bits of embellishments etc that the bubs could get their hands caught in etc.
So thankyou again for your generousity ladies - you have done a really lovely thing.
